Art as Poems Without Words

The painter, Wassily Kandinsky often called his abstract art "poems without words." He also said, "The work of art is born of the artist in a mysterious and secret way. From him, art gains life and being. Its existence is not casual and inconsequent, but has a definite and purposeful strength."

I like to think this is true of poetry too. It all goes hand in hand.

Creating art is a space that allows me the freedom to use color, shapes, lines, and marks much like, but unlike creating a poem.

Painting helps to free any writing blocks if they should arise.

And while I don't hold myself to the same responsibility as a visual artist

as I hold to myself as a poet, it's incredibly important to my process.

That in itself allows for more freedom of expression on the canvas and the page.
